§1Typography

The body text of The Filed Record is set in Vollkorn, designed by Friedrich Althausen and released under the SIL Open Font License. Vollkorn was selected for the 2026 issue cycle after a long evaluation against Source Serif 4 and Spectral. It carries the scholarly weight a sealed PE report deserves while remaining readable at 1 rem on a 60–75 character measure; its variable axes (weight and italic) let the editorial designer use the italic for headlines and the regular for body without loading two separate font files.

Display type is set in Schibsted Grotesk, designed by Henrik Kubel for Schibsted Media Group’s in-house publications and released under the OFL. The face is news-agency-grade — clean, federal, well-spaced for masthead use — and pairs well against Vollkorn for the publication’s editorial register. Schibsted Grotesk handles the all-caps department labels, the kicker strokes, the nav, and the masthead wordmark. Variable axis: weight (400 – 900).

Monospaced type is set in Courier Prime, designed by Alan Dague-Greene for Quote-Unquote Apps’s 2014 Hollywood-screenplay font release and freely licensed. It carries the courthouse-stenographer / deposition-transcript register the firm needs for case-file numbers, instrument labels, time-stamped fault data, and chain-of-custody markings. Courier Prime is descended from IBM’s 1955 Selectric Courier through several lineages; its modern revival is a more pleasant body face than its forebears.

§2Palette

The Filed Record’s six-hex palette:

• #EFE8D6 · sodium-lit paper bone (canvas, body background)
• #0E0F0C · carbon-paper black (body text, masthead, footer)
• #7BB661 · oscilloscope-phosphor green (data exhibits, accent)
• #A52B1F · thermal-stamp red (Case File numbers, stamps, alerts)
• #1F3A5F · sealed-stamp Prussian (links, citations, calm accent)
• #5D6B72 · slate grey (hairlines, metadata, ledger rules)

The palette was chosen against three constraints: WCAG AA contrast on body text against the bone canvas (passed at 12.7:1 for carbon on bone); perceptual differentiation between the phosphor data accent and the thermal-stamp red such that no exhibit could be misread by a viewer with deuteranomalous color vision (verified using Coblis); and contemporaneity with the working aesthetic of mid-2020s technical-paper publishing rather than with the museum-archive register the firm could have leaned on.

§3Instrumentation

The firm’s working instruments — referenced repeatedly across the Reports and Case Files — are listed for completeness:

• Dranetz PowerVisa PX5 — power-quality analyzer, used in R-02 and R-04. Two units in service.
• Hioki PQ3198 — IEC 61000-4-30 Class A. Primary R-04 instrument.
• Fluke 1773 — power logger.
• Fluke 438-II — motor analyzer (R-03 bench work).
• Megger MIT525 — 5 kV insulation tester.
• Doble M4100 — insulation power-factor and dissipation-factor test set.
• Tektronix MDO34 — 4-channel mixed-domain oscilloscope.
• Yokogawa CW500 — clamp-on power meter.
• AEMC 6471 — three-pole ground tester for fall-of-potential.
• Fluke 1630-2 FC — earth-ground clamp.
• Bender LineTraxx — ground-fault monitoring.
• Vaisala NLDN — commercial subscription, R-07.

All instruments are calibrated annually to ISO 17025 traceability through Tektronix Calibration Services or the manufacturer’s designated calibration laboratory; certificates are appended to every sealed report.

§4Infrastructure

The Filed Record is published as a static site on Cloudflare Workers Static Assets from the firm’s internal repository. The site is served from the edge with no origin server; HTML is hand-authored in semantic HTML5 with modern CSS (custom properties, fluid clamp() typography, grid + flex layout, container queries where useful). There is no build step, no JavaScript framework, no bundler. The bytes that ship to the reader’s browser are the bytes the editor wrote.

Fonts are served from Google Fonts via the standard CDN with display=swap. The site’s critical path is small enough that the next-Tuesday print run of the firm’s Behrend evening lecture handouts arrives faster than the home page on a fresh load, but only by about 200 ms; close enough.
